Tu B'Av, also known as the "Festival of Love" is a very, very minor Jewish holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Av — the Hebrew letters representing the number 15, hence the name "Tu B'Av".
Although not a biblical holiday, Tu B'Av was a joyous day observed during the Second Temple period in ancient Israel. It’s said that this was when Israel was at its most joyous (other than on Yom Kippur, oddly enough) and the young women used to go out dancing in white dresses.
Today, Tu B'Av has been revived as a day celebrating love, unity, and matchmaking. You’ll find Valentine’s Day-style aesthetics in Israeli stores, and some in the Diaspora celebrate it by going out on a date, or giving a gift to their beloved.
And today. you’re our beloved!
This is our most popular program, giving students the chance to dive into Jewish holidays, lifecycle events, history, texts, culture, and more. We hope you’ll come out of the course feeling even more educated and connected to Judaism.
Happy Tu B’av!
